Artistic Statement
Claire Weetman produces varied visual art works for exhibition that investigate space and exploit movement. For information about past exhibitions, please download the PDF to the left.
Claire’s lack of a studio forces her out into public spaces, where she records space and responds to movement that is present in the environment. Her latest series of sculptures, Crossings, sees her moving along and across the River Mersey, recording space using lengths of string which are then formed into sculptures. These actions and places are documented by the Downstream:Upstream series of photographs.
Drawing and line is often used by Claire in her explorations, most evident recently in the Figure Study series of works. Drawings onto transparent surfaces were inspired by the movement of figures beyond, these works have been shown as temporary installations and photographic documentation exists which is exhibited independently.
The Sit and Draw series used an office chair, adapted to take felt tipped pens, which trace the movement of the sitter onto the floor surface. Some images in this series are wild and frenetic, whilst others become more geometric as a result of repetitive movements.
Investigations was a series of paper windbreaks placed around the City of Liverpool upon which the movement of sound was recorded in a visual manner and All in a day’s work was a series of drawings resulting from the movement of bamboo branches in the wind at Norton Priory. The ink on paper and graphite on paper drawings were formed organically over several hours where the only intervention by the artist was the application of the ink and the documentation of the process.
Documentation is key to Claire’s work, as the process of producing the pieces is often temporary and reliant on the circumstances at the time. Documentation normally takes place in the form of photographs and drawings which are often exhibited alongside each other.
